Transforming Today's Learners into Tomorrow's Leaders

Commissioner's Corner

The Commissioner's Corner serves as a direct link to continue to connect to you, our audience, and stakeholders to the Virgin Islands Department of Education. The VIDE leads the charge of transforming today's learners into tomorrow's leaders and we are committed to transparency and keeping you informed on all things related to the educational system of the USVI.

#GoOpenUSVI

A library of open education resources and a network of Virgin Islands educators who are dedicated to using high-quality, openly-licensed educational resources.

The worldwide Open Educational Resources (OER) movement is rooted in the human right to access high-quality education. This shift in educational practice is about participation and co-creation, which offers opportunities for systemic change in teaching and learning content through engaging educators in new participatory processes and effective technologies for engaging with learning. By joining this movement, the USVI ushers in a wave of openly-licensed digital resources modified to adjust to the needs of our students.

New Schools

Legislation by the United States Congress has provided funds to cover not only disaster-related damages due to 2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria, but also funding to achieve current industry standards for the educational facilities occupied by the Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE). This includes nearly all instructional and supporting facilities, totaling prior to the hurricanes, nearly three million square feet on all three islands.

This legislation created unprecedented opportunity to change the footprint of education in the United States Virgin Islands. To guide this process, the VIDE has developed an Educational Facility Master Plan.

The VIDE has developed newschoolsvide.com as a platform by which to engage the US Virgin Islands public school community, and keep you updated on our progress.

Please visit often for updates and for ways to connect with us.
